Horticulture Assistant- Full Time Position
The City of Staunton Parks Maintenance division is seeking a full-time horticulture assistant that plants and maintains the city’s parks, gardens, and landscape areas. Under direction of the city horticulturist, the horticultural assistant will plant, spray, weed, mulch, and maintain beds.
Experience in ornamental horticulture including bed layout, establishment of trees, shrubs, annuals and perennials preferred. Knowledge of plant diseases and insects is highly desired. Assists with tree care work including planting, pruning, removals, and clean-up of debris. Makes herbicide, fertilizer, and pesticide applications as needed. This is a “hands on” position that involves lifting, bending, stooping, and repetitive motions Ability to operate landscape related power equipment and to perform manual labor required. Position also involves outdoor work in all weather conditions, emergency clean-up work after storm events, and snow removal. Ability to follow oral and written instructions required.
A VA driver’s license with good driving record is required, a Virginia CDL Class B with air brake endorsement is preferred. Required certifications include: VDACS Certified Pesticide Applicator Registered Tech, VDACS Certified Fertilizer Applicator, and VDOT Basic Work Zone Traffic Control. A pre-employment physical and drug/alcohol testing required. Qualified applicants without these certifications will be given 1 year from hire to obtain them. Hiring range: $17.96/hour to $21.42/hour (+) excellent benefits. This position is open until filled.
