                                                 POSITION DESCRIPTION

 

 

JOB TITLE: Secondary Assistant Principal

 

LOCATION: Middle and High School

 

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR:

Principal

 

GRADE/RANK: 2432

 

FLSA STATUS: Exempt

 

SUMMARY:

Position is responsible for assisting the school principal in the planning, organization, administration, and management of an assigned secondary school. Position assists with supervising staff, creating a safe environment, monitoring curriculum, budget development, and other duties associated with the successful operation of a secondary school.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:

The minimum performance expectations include, but are not limited to, the following functions/tasks:

  • Assists the principal in the implementation, supervision and evaluation of the total school instructional program.
  • Assists with and supervises the daily operation of the school’s attendance and discipline program, security functions, transportation, and the medical clinic and works in cooperation with central office administrators/supervisors who have division-wide responsibility for these operations.
  • Coordinates the assignments of and assists with the supervision of student teachers, aides, and volunteers.
  • Assists the secondary principal in establishing and sustaining relationships with the business community and other youth serving organizations to foster understanding and solicit support for students and their families.
  • Seeks ways to develop and sustain a climate of mutual respect between and among the students and adults who participate in the school.
  • Monitors halls, school grounds, and pupil movement to ensure a safe and orderly environment at the assigned school.
  • Attends and supervises after-school, evening, and weekend school sponsored events and activities as assigned.
  • Assists with staff development regarding instructional practices and school-related policies and procedures.
  • Consults with student services personnel to find long term solutions to inappropriate student behavior.
  • Articulates and supports school safety initiatives to the faculty and school community.
  • Assists in the preparation of related reports and records as required by the school division, local, state, or federal government.
  • Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.

 Other Duties

  • Stays informed of developments and research pertaining to safe and orderly schools.
  • Performs any other related duties as assigned by the Principal or other appropriate administrator.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Preferred:

  • a comprehensive knowledge of the current issues, principles, and practices in public secondary school education and the ability to apply them to the needs of a school;
  • demonstrated success as an effective administrator in a comprehensive high school;
  • experience working with a diverse student population and community;
  • knowledge and effective skills in curriculum development, high quality instructional practices, professional development, use of technology and interpretation of test data;
  • the ability to assist with administering and managing the operation of a secondary school;
  • the ability to plan and supervise the work of others and;
  • skills in effective communication/relationship building with students, parents, staff, and the public.

QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Must hold or be eligible to hold a Postgraduate Professional License with endorsement in Administrative Leadership PreK-12 or equivalent endorsement, plus three years of secondary school level teaching and leadership/supervisory experience, or equivalent experience. 

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT/CONDITIONS:

Duties performed typically in school settings to include: school office, classroom, gym, cafeteria, auditorium, and recreational areas. Frequent walking, standing, stooping, lifting, up to approximately 30 pounds, and occasional lifting of equipment and/or materials weighing up to approximately 40 pounds may be required. Other limited physical activities are required. Occasional travel with students on field trips may be necessary. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, noise and hazards. Occasional movement of students by wheelchairs and other mechanical devices may be required. Regular contact with special needs children is necessary. Regular contact with staff members, students, parents, and community members is required. Frequent contact with parents by phone and in person is necessary. Occasional contact with medical professionals may be required.
