The City of Staunton is seeking an innovative person who performs complex professional and technical tasks to support the development and implementation of long-range planning efforts, including special area plans, small area plans and comprehensive plans. To support planning efforts, the incumbent will help develop graphics, presentations, and other materials to share information with the public and for incorporation into planning documents. Employee must exercise tact and courtesy in regular contact with the public, engineers, developers, as well as technical support to the Planning Commission and City Council. The position works independently and must employ initiative and independent judgement in completing assigned tasks.
The selected candidate must have a thorough knowledge of principles and practices of city and regional planning and
knowledge of civil engineering, architecture, political science, and other related field as applied to planning. The individual must have the ability to: plan and organize and perform comprehensive research studies, analyze problems, prepare and analyze technical reports; speak effectively before large public gatherings; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, officials, and the public; organize and work on complex projects simultaneously and with interruptions; prepare and make public presentations; work independently and exercise good judgment; understand and manage high-profile, sensitive or controversial political situations and; the ability to exercise sound and independent judgment within general policy guidelines. The selected candidate must also possess strong written and oral communication skills, including the editing, oversight or preparation of technical reports, and the presentation of information to government entities and various committees.
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in urban or regional planning, geography, or a related field required. Three (3) years of experience in professional planning work with experience in comprehensive/long-range planning.
Possession of a valid appropriate driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia and a good driving record. Must be available to work some evenings each month and occasional weekends to present information to groups and attend meetings pertaining to long-range planning activities on behalf of the city. This position is not assigned the supervision of staff but may have an intern to oversee during short term placement.

Grade: 16
Hiring Range: $64,000 to $70,000 DOE/DOQ
Start Date: Negotiable
Reports To: Director of Community Development
