POSITION DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: Bus Monitor

SUMMARY:
The Bus Monitor assists with the safety of handicapped students loading and unloading, and en route to and from school.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:
The minimum performance expectations include, but are not limited to, the following functions/tasks:
- To secure each student into his/her location with either harness, seat belt, wheel chair locks or other safety equipment;
- To maintain discipline in keeping with division regulations;
- To instruction riders regarding being responsible passengers;
- To be alert and exercise good judgment concerning emergencies;
- To assist in emergency evacuation drills in keeping with division regulations;
- To know the physical and/or emotional handicap of each student on the bus and;
- To perform other duties as assigned by the Supervisor of Transportation.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Ability to operate radio communication when necessary;
- Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of high school preferred; experience working with school-age population is desirable;
- Meet State physical examination requires;
- Ability to deal with exuberant behavioral characteristics of youthful riders;
- Ability to lift and/or carry children as required and;
- Ability to recognize problems and move quickly to solve them.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
