Staunton City Schools, located in historic Staunton, Virginia in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley, is seeking highly qualified applicants for a Registered Nurse (RN) position at T.C. McSwain Elementary School for the 2024-25 school year. Position opened until filled.

 

200 Day Employment Notice.

Hourly Rate Range: $30.00 to $40.00 DOE/DOQ.

                                               POSITION DESCRIPTION

 

 

JOB TITLE: Nurse

 

LOCATION: Schools

 

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR:

Principal

 

GRADE/RANK: 2020

 

FLSA STATUS: Exempt

 

SUMMARY:

The School Nurse performs special physical health care procedures and administers medication according to district procedure. Performs a variety of clerical tasks and related work as required in schools. Works within the framework of school law, district rules, and adhering to National Nursing and First Aid standards. Works under the supervision of the lead nurse and/or school administrator.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:

The minimum performance expectations include, but are not limited to, the following functions/tasks:

  • Interprets state health regulations;
  • Serves as a liaison among the professional medical community, the various departments within the school division, parents, administrators, students and the health services providers;
  • Provides health information to students and staff;
  • Maintains health records of students per school board policy and respects the confidentiality of records and information;
  • Provides CPR and First Aid training when needed;
  • Performs emergency care and basic first aid;
  • Develops and facilitates and monitors health care plans for students;
  • Provides training to and monitoring of specialized health care procedures;
  • Performs specialized health care procedures as trained and assigned i.e. suctioning, tube feeding, catheterization, etc.;
  • Maintain documentation of procedures performed;
  • Maintains clean and orderly environment for health care procedures;
  • Reports student health concerns to pertinent individuals (principal, teacher, lead nurse, and parents);
  • Prepares and compiles various departmental records and reports, and performs a variety of clerical work, including proofreading, filing, verifying and recording information on records;
  • Provides health counseling/instruction (under direction of lead nurse);
  • Supplies and adequately maintains the school clinic and checks first aid supplies and equipment daily and;
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Lead Nurse and School Principal.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Correct English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation.
  • Routine record keeping.
  • General concepts of childhood growth and development and childhood behavior characteristics.
  • Basic first aid CPR, appropriate response to illness and injury and performance of specialized health care procedures.
  • Emergency medical resources in school community.
  • Demonstrate an understanding, patient, warm, and receptive attitude toward children and parents.
  • Learn and perform specialized health care procedures.
  • Work in organized manner under stress.
  • Communicate clearly with parents, staff and students.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Receive and give information over the phone and in person in a courteous manner.
  • Maintain cooperative working relationships.
  • Perform a variety of basic clerical work with accuracy and speed.
  • Work effectively with school and district staff.

QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Licensed Registered Nurse
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience working with children in a school setting preferred

Duties performed typically in school settings to include classrooms, gyms, cafeteria, auditorium and recreational areas.  While performing this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle or feel, reach with hand, and talk or hear; light lifting up to 40 pounds and other limited physical activities are required.  Occasional movement of students by wheelchairs and other mechanical devices may be required.
